Parent tips for different emotions

DISGUSTED

Disgust is a natural reaction to things that seem yucky, unsafe, or wrong. It's part of learning what feels good or bad to our senses and boundaries.

Supporting children identify and name emotions

Tips for Parents

🌟 Name the Emotion
Help your child recognize disgust by saying:
"It looks like you found that really yucky!"

🌟 Normalize the Reaction
Disgust protects us — it's okay to dislike certain smells, tastes, or textures.

🌟 Offer Choices
Help children feel in control by offering choices when possible:
"You don’t have to eat it, let’s find something else you like."

Bonus Tip

If disgust leads to strong reactions:

  • Keep calm.

  • Teach respectful ways to say "no thank you" without hurting feelings.
